Get 2012 off to a great start by attending the broomball matches at RiverScape Ice Rink! Neighbors from Historic South Park have formed a team, The South Park Nation Army! You can cheer them on Monday evenings in January and February from 6-8PM, while enjoying hot chocolate and warming by a fire pit!  Here is the schedule and league table. South Park will be playing Lucky’s Taproom, Dead Men on Ice, Bolts, The Honey Badgers and GDRA.

Broomball got its start in the early 1900s when Canada’s street car workers played a hockey-like sport with corn brooms and a soccer ball, but without ice skates. Local games involve six players per team for two 12-minute halves with a 5-minute break. There is a referee. Like soccer, there is a net on either end of the ice rink. Play begins as teams face each other across a central line. Using “brooms” and a 7-inch diameter soccer-like ball, each team defends its own goal while trying to push the ball into the opposing team’s net with their brooms. Brooms must be kept below the waist throughout play. Players are not allowed to enter the offensive zone of the opposing team before the ball does. Crossing into the zone before the ball is ruled off-sides.

Take the family and enjoy this lively winter activity!
